Full Musician Biography
Danielle Sum (she/her) is a Toronto-based musician and songwriter who is known for her deep, honest musicality. As a classically trained percussionist, she is versatile on a multitude of instruments, such as marimba, vibraphone, and drum set. As a songwriter, Danielle draws her inspiration from indie artists such as Mitski and Sufjan Stevens.
An avid performer, Danielle enjoys exploring the possibilities in combining mallet percussion instruments and voice. She can be seen singing and playing vibraphone in the indie-folk ensemble Tiger Balme, as well as in various musical theatre pits throughout the city.
Danielle has performed in masterclasses for She-E Wu, Katarzyna Mycka, and Conrado Moya, and enjoys enhancing her own musical education by attending festivals such as the International Katarzyna Mycka Marimba Academy. Her ensemble experience includes performing with Scarborough Music Theatre, Oshawa Little Theatre, the Band of the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, the Royal Conservatory Orchestra, the Etobicoke Philharmonic, and Weston Silver Band.
A featured performer of the Music Mondays 2018 concert series, she has also been featured as a soloist with the Rouge River Winds in the final concert of their 2017-18 season. Danielle has also appeared as a soloist with the University of Toronto Wind Symphony as a result of winning the Winds Concerto Competition in 2015, and was a finalist in the Orchestra Toronto Marta Hidy Competition in 2016.
Danielle is also an avid educator, teaching in her private studio and conducting percussion clinics in schools. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Music, where she studied with Beverley Johnston, John Rudolph, and Mark Duggan.
